Sharp Image . Precise Focus . Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH

Leica is very dedicated and professional in making cameras and lenses. It would not be possible to produce so many attractive artistic photos without Leica’s perfectionism towards camera and lens production. Looking back on history, Leica became the first one in many attempts which no one had done before, and turned impossible to possible.

Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 lenses are the best among 35mm lenses. 35mm wide-angle and f/1.4 large aperture create an excellent combination, which has captured lots of outstanding photos. The birth of Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (I) allows the image performance to reach a very high level, and Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (II) even consists of greatly enhanced optical design. It shows that Leica is able to go from a peak to an even higher peak.

Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (I) was produced during 1994-2009, consisting of black chrome, silver chrome and titanium body. There is also a special platinum version for the limited edition “150 Jahre Optik” (code 10480). The grinding and moulding technique to cast the lens into shape were precise and superior. Every glass has to withstand heat and pressure during the making process. Thus, all the finished lenses are of very high quality.

After modifying Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (I), the performance of ASPH (II) surpasses the former and it becomes the most excellent wide-angle lens in the eyes of photographers. The second version was produced from 2010 to current, with black chrome body only. Other special versions include solid titanium external parts for the “Walter de’ Silva” M9 Titanium limited edition and silver chrome for the M7 Hermes edition.

The adding of floating elements group greatly enhances the image quality. It solves the problem of focusing shift and allows accurate focusing from the closest distance to infinity. It also reduces scattering light and flare. The images captured by the lens are especially sharp. Besides, compared to the larger plastic hood used by the first version, the smaller golden hood used by the second version is firmer and more durable.

Recently, Leica has released the latest silver chrome version of Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH at Photokina to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Leica M. The technical specification of the silver chrome version is the same as the black chrome version of ASPH (II), with f/1.4 large aperture adequate for night photography and able to create wonderfully blurred shallow depth of field. Its light and compact body makes it a perfect partner for travelling.

When Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (I) was released, lots of people thought that the lens was very difficult to be replaced. However, Leica made a surprised breakthrough and produced Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH (II) with more brilliant image performance. The price of ASPH (II) is higher as well. ASPH (II) becomes indispensable for photographers, and serves as a proof for Leica’s spirit of continuously chasing the best.
