Leica M 50th Anniversary Limited Edition ‧ Leica M7 Titanium

Leica released M7 Titanium “50 Jahre M-System” single lens kit special limited edition of 500 limited sets and 3 lens kit of only 50 sets in 2004 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Leica M system.

The single lens kit came with a newly-designed Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens made of Titanium. The 3 lens kit came with Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, Summicron 28mm f/2 ASPH and Apo-Summicron 90mm f/2 ASPH lenses made of Titanium.

Previous M6 and M6 TTL Titanium were only covered with a titanium outer finish, but all inner and outer metal parts of Leica M7 Titanium (more than 30 parts in total) are made of solid titanium, including top deck, baseplate, all interior and exterior operation elements and even the Leica logo.

The middle part of the camera body is covered by black bridle leather, enhancing the texture and making it more beautiful. The camera top was engraved “1954-2004 50 Jahre Leica M System” special wording, marking the period from 1954 where Leica M3, the first Leica camera with M bayonet was introduced to 2004 where Leica had gone through 50 years. It has valuable meaning.

Titanium is hard and corrosion-resistant. It has light weight, allowing M7 Titanium to be 13% lighter than standard M7. However, the casting of titanium is not an easy work. First, it takes a lot of time to cast a piece of titanium, around five times longer than casting the same pieces in brass or aluminum. Second, as the casting tool is easy to wear down under high temperature, it needs to change the casting tool very often in order to produce perfect finishing products. Therefore, it increases the value accordingly.

Leica M7 Titanium single lens kit comes with a titanium-made Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH lens. The last three digits of its serial number match that of the camera.

Apart from Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH, the 3 lens kit adds titanium-made Summicron 28mm f/2 ASPH and Apo-Summicron 90mm f/2 ASPH. A special technique was employed to deposit a thin layer of silicon dioxide on the lens body which even kept unwanted prints from fingertips away. The 28mm lens has an external hood in titanium, so as the three lens caps on this kit.

For 28mm and 50mm lenses, the serial numbers are shown near the front lens whereas 90mm had it on the lens barrel. The “19XX / 28”, “19XX / 50” and “19XX / 90” indicates they are the respective lens paired to a certain Leica M year. The 50 pieces of M7 titanium camera body for 3 lens kit also engraved Leica M creation years from 1954 to 2004 respectively.

A custom-made case commissioned to Rimowa, a Germany-based leading manufacturer of luggage, was built specially for the 3 lens kit sets. The case, made of aluminum but painted with titanium colour, allows the titanium body and lenses to lie comfortably inside. Inside the silver box package there are instruction manual, warranty cards and certificates undersigned by Leica AG board members Hanns-Peter Cohn and Ralf Coenen.
